Alfred Mann is one of the great medical device developers of our time. I had the privilege to attend the Medical Design Excellence Awards in New York where he was awards the MDEA Lifetime Achievement award.
Today was awards day. The Medical Design Excellence awards recognise the achievements of medical product manufacturers, engineers, designers and clinicians who are responsible for groundbreaking innovations that “change the face of healthcare”. Encircle had been selected by the Medical Design Excellence programme as a breakthrough medical device for general hospital and therapeutic applications.

Well the MD&M East tradeshow is massive http://canontradeshows.com/expo/east11/ . In true US form, this tradeshow had almost it all. The tradeshow is geared towards original equipment manufacturing (OEM) for medical devices and services.

Today I attended the MD&M East Conference programme which included presentations on the FDA 510(k) process by Marjorie Shulman and Semih Oktay, a presentation of product development by Carrolyn Rice from Johnson & Johnson, and Intellectual Property by Andrew Kimmel from Knobbe Martens.

History has it that the Dutch East Indian Trading Company pulled into the New York area to trade with local Indians around in 1609 following Henry Hudson's search for a Northwest Passage. From the very beginning it was a trading port and it was this beginning that has helped shape the mode of operations with the financial hub of America; Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange; this was my agenda for Day 2.
